Significance of Dhanteras
Dhanteras is a highly auspicious occasion celebrated in the Kartik month of the Hindu lunar calendar. The story linked with Dhanteras is that once there was a king who was prophesied to die on the fourth day of his marriage by a snake bite. When the fourth day arrived, King's wife made a lot of efforts to save her husband. She recited alluring prayers and songs to distract the snake and let it not enter the king’s place. She also placed a massive amount of ornaments, gold, and lustrous items right outside the King's place. When Lord Yamaraja tries to bite the king in disguise as a snake, he gets distracted by the tactics implemented by the king’s wife. He tried his best to bite the King but couldn't complete his motives. Another significant legend linked with Dhanteras is that Lord Dhanvantari also took manifestation on this day only.
