In Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5 , Lord Krishna describes three types of spiritual contenders. A yogi is a spiritual learner who still seeks many desires in life. He has to tread the path of action. Next is the sanyasi who has given up on his desires and is all set to take up the path of contemplation and meditation. He lives in his own world and can be easily freed from world desires. On the other hand, he has to tread the path of Karma Yoga in order to prepare himself for meditation. While a yogi is focussed on self purification, a sanyasi should behave like a lotus leaf in water---detached from the world yet existing in it. A jnani, the third type on the other hand, is a vivacious actor who pretends that he has done nothing while he continues to perform his actions. The Lord also emphasises the spirit of Renunciation which is just not turning away from worldly desires but weeding out attachments that come in the way of relationships. According to Lord Krishna, Renunciation opens the doors to Realisation which leads to happiness.
