Another prominent legend linked with Mahashivratri is that Samundra manthan also takes place on Mahashivratri only. In samundra manthan, the great churning of the ocean took place, and elixir and poison emerged from it. Lord Shiva drank the poison and distributed the elixir among the other godheads.
