Devutthana Ekadashi- A day devoted to Lord Vishnu
Devutthana Ekadashi is a glorious occasion devoted to the mighty Lord Vishnu. The commanding Lord Vishnu is one of the supreme godheads in Hindu cosmology. He is the protector and guardian of the entire universe. The mighty Lord is an integral part of the trinity of godheads that comprise Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.
Significance of Devutthana Ekadashi
There are twenty-four Ekadashi in a year that celebrate the glories and powers of Lord Vishnu. This Ekadashi is also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi. It is celebrated in the Kartik month of the Hindu lunar calendar. There is a very prominent legend linked with Prabodhini or Devutthana Ekadashi. Thus, all the auspicious events, especially marriage and other pious occasions, occur after Devutthana Ekadashi's tithi. It is believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps on the Devshyani Ekadashi and wakes up after four months. The period of four months in which Lord Vishnu sleeps is known as Chaturmas. During Chaturmas, all the special events, especially marriage, are banned. The day when Lord Vishnu wakes up from his meditative sleep of four months is Prabodhini or Devutthana Ekadashi.
How to celebrate Devutthana Ekadashi?
Devutthana Ekadashi is observed by devoting a special fast to Lord Vishnu. They wake up early, take a bath in sacred water and start fulfilling their fast with complete devotion. On this day, intake of rice or cereals is strictly prohibited. Devotees chant mantras, sloka and storms to glorify Lord Vishnu’s energies. Sleeping is also prohibited on this Ekadashi as it negates the positive energies.
