Chapter 14

In Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14, Lord Krishna says that material nature consists of three modesgoodness, passion and ignorance. These bind and control all conditioned souls within this world. Amongst them there is also control for supremacy. He says that when there is an increase in the mode of ignorance, darkness, inertia, madness and illusion are manifested. From the mode of goodness, real knowledge develops, from passion greed develops and from ignorance foolishness, madness and illusion develop. A soul through devotional service can transcend these modes. Thus, the limitations imposed by the field of activities can be overthrown and the soul can be elevated to the Brahman platform, the constitutional position of purity and happinessa platform of which Krishna is the basis. One must be detached from the modes and their results in order to be attached to the service of the Lord.
